What is all this?
This is my contribution to the sports ratings world -- standings and ratings
for all women's basketball teams in the NCAA. No frills, no ads, only a couple
of cookies (so I can track page views).
The Data
- Ratings: These computer ratings use the system developed by
David Wilson (Wisconsin-Madison) many years ago. I'm honored to continue sharing
his results. They do seem to over-rank strong conferences a little.
- Scores: I used to collect scores from the NCAA's public website (which
they contracted out to Turner Sports), but they just missed too many games. From
2025 onward, I use the scores graciously provided by Dr.
Kenneth Massey.
- Making the ratings more accurate: Early in the season, I use games from
last year to give the ratings a meaningful starting point. David's original algorithm
started everyone at the same place, which I don't think is realistic. The effect
of this starting point wears off by the time 8 or 9 games have been played.
