What is all this?
There are not many sites that provide comprehensive information about Division 2
basketball on the web, and virtually no one provides ratings and rankings of all
the teams in the division. So that's my contribution: a computer rating that
will take all the games of all ~300 teams and produce a comprehensive ranking,
plus easy-to-read conference standings for everyone in the division, too.
The Data
- Ratings: These computer ratings use the system developed by
David Wilson (Wisconsin-Madison) many years ago. I'm honored to continue sharing
his results. They do seem to over-rank strong conferences a little, but that
could be an artifact of how not quite as many non-conference games get played
in D-II and D-III compared to D-I.
- Scores: Game results are provided by Missouri S&T.
I continue to be indebted to John Kean, who has served as sports information
director at Missouri S&T for over 30 years -- he has meticulously gathered
scores and schedules and provided their exceptional website for nearly that
long.
- Making the ratings more accurate: I am occasionally importing NAIA
games so that the strength of those opponents will be better represented.
Unfortunately, my upstream source for those games, National Statistical, misses quite a few
games so the result is definitely not perfect. But overall this is a net
positive -- a more accurate strength of schedule assessment.
